Villa Balbiano is an example of the sheer opulence on Lake Como. Perched on the lake just outside the town of Lenno, it has its very own private boat pier ideal for a stylish arrival. Built by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio at the end of the 16th-century to command stunning views over the lake, it continues to do this today.
Nestled within three acres of lawns and gardens, and enjoying private access to the lake and two swimming pools, Villa Balbiano is able to meet the desires of the most discerning guests and is the perfect venue for organizing weddings or other special events. The immaculately landscaped gardens have statues and fountains, and its paths are flanked by mature hedges and ancient Cypress trees.
In the late 18th century, the villa hosted a gallant and frivolous society where festivals, banquets and dances followed one another relentlessly. The lounges housed recitation meetings, concerts or literary discussions.
Inside, the spectacular Baroque frescoes by the Recchi brothers in the early 17th century can still be seen. In the lobby, Cardinal Durini, a former resident and a well-known collector of art, installed its rich library, known to all scholars of the time. Nearby, where the river empties into Perlana’s lake, the pipe works commissioned by Durini to stem the flow of water can still be admired.
The villa was recently restored by the famous French decorator Jacques Garcia. Its interiors are covered in magnificent Baroque frescoes from the 17th century and the six bedrooms are lavishly decorated with exquisite antiques.
A heated indoor and outdoor pool with lake views provide a sublime venue for relaxation. But the real pampering comes from the discrete staff who include a chef, butler, housekeepers and concierge.
